So many people have asked us how and why we started Llama Lunch. There are so many logical reasons, but also some that may not be as obvious.
Like most busy families, we struggled with finding the time and energy to plan for, shop, and prepare wholesome quality lunches every morning that our kids would eat. In addition to our kids’ busy schedule of activities, our own work and careers were busy. We craved more downtime to spend with just our kids hanging out, time with each other, and time for ourselves.
We knew we weren’t alone. All our friends with school-aged kids seemed to have the same issues with their kids’ lunches. The topic of the dreaded school lunch—what to pack, how to make it nutritious, and when to find time to make it—came up often.
But there was something more…
We learned from family members working in the school system that, unfortunately, kids coming to school hungry and without lunch are not as rare as we think. While there are some school lunch programs in our community, there are no publicly funded programs that guarantee each child in Saskatoon will have lunch at school every day.
This just didn’t sit right with us. But what could we do to help kids who aren’t lucky enough to have a lunch, let alone a healthy one, packed for them every morning?
Our entrepreneurial brains started churning.
Is there a way we could make our own lives a little bit more convenient, and at the same time, help to make the lives of others less fortunate a WHOLE lot easier? The ideas started to flow, some we tossed, others we kept. Just a few short months later, we embarked on an unexpected journey we are so excited to be on.
Llama Lunch was born!
